The Origin of Domino
The precise origin of dominoes is uncertain, as the game has evolved over the years and has been played in different forms depending on the culture. However, it is believed that the modern version of the game we know today comes from ancient China and likely originated during the 13th century. Although the original tiles were not like the ones we use now, the idea was the same—tiles with dots representing different values.
The game of dominoes spread along the Silk Road and eventually reached the West through trade exchanges and various maritime routes. It is likely that dominoes arrived in our continent through European colonization and the cultural interactions between Europe and the Americas at that time. Spanish and Portuguese colonizers probably brought the game with them to entertain themselves during the long hours spent on ships in search of new lands.
Over time, dominoes became increasingly popular in several South American countries and developed into a well-known recreational activity across the region. Each country may have its own variant of rules and styles of play, which has created great diversity in how dominoes is played in different parts of the continent.
