How to Play Rummy
Materials Needed
-
A Rummy set with 106 tiles (numbers 1 to 13 in four colors, duplicated)
-
2 jokers
-
Racks for each player
-
2 to 4 players
Objective of the Game
The goal is to be the first player to get rid of all your tiles by forming valid combinations on the table (sets or runs). If the game is blocked, the winner is the player with the lowest total points on their remaining tiles.
Setup
-
Shuffle the tiles: Place all the tiles face down on the table and mix them well.
-
Draw tiles: Each player takes 14 tiles and places them on their rack. The rest are placed in the center as the draw pile.
-
Choose the first player: Select randomly. Play proceeds clockwise.
Gameplay
-
On each turn, a player may lay down valid combinations if they have 30 or more points in new tiles.
-
If they cannot play, they must draw one tile from the pile and pass their turn.
-
After making the first valid play (at least 30 points), on later turns a player may:
-
Lay down new combinations
-
Add to or rearrange combinations already on the table
-
Place tiles onto other players’ sets or runs
-
Valid combinations include:
-
Runs: Three or more tiles of the same color in consecutive numerical order
-
Sets: Three or four tiles of the same number in different colors
-
Jokers: May substitute for any tile in a combination
End of the Game
-
A player wins the round when they play all their tiles.
-
If no one can continue and the pile is empty, the winner is the player with the lowest total points on their rack.
