Chess: A Journey Through Time

Chess is one of the oldest and most fascinating games in the world, with a history that spans more than 1,500 years. Originally from India, the game began as Chaturanga in the 6th century, representing the four divisions of the army: infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. From India, it spread to Persia, where it became known as Shatranj, and later reached the Islamic world and Europe.

Chess is not only a game, but also a metaphor for life and strategy, with each piece playing a crucial role on the board. In the Middle Ages, chess was embraced by European nobility, and over time, the rules evolved into the modern version we know today.

This game of strategy has been more than just entertainment—it has inspired thinkers, artists, and strategists throughout the centuries. From kings to warriors, chess has long been a symbol of intelligence and power.

Fun facts about chess:

  • In 1997, IBM’s computer Deep Blue made history by defeating world champion Garry Kasparov.

  • The longest recorded chess game lasted 269 moves, played in 1989.

  • It is estimated that there are more than 10⁴⁰ possible chess positions—more than the number of atoms in the universe!
