Backgammon, one of the oldest games in history!
The exact origin of backgammon is uncertain, as it is a game with a history dating back several thousands of years. It is believed that backgammon originated in the Middle East, although the specific culture of its invention is not clearly identified.
Backgammon is one of the oldest known board games, with boards discovered in archaeological excavations dating back more than 5,000 years in places such as Mesopotamia (the region that today includes Iraq, Iran, and Syria). At that time, the game was highly valued in the medieval Islamic world and was known as tawla in Arabic. During this period, the game had different names and rules across cultures, but it shared fundamental similarities with the backgammon we know today.
The game grew increasingly popular throughout history via trade routes and cultural exchanges, and it was adopted in Europe during the Middle Ages. The name backgammon comes from Old English baec (back) and gamen (game), referring to the backward movement of the checkers on the board. Over the centuries, the game has developed and evolved into the modern backgammon we know today.
